Caparezza aka Michele Salvemini hails from Molfetta (Apulia). His career mirrors, to some degree, that of Jovanotti. In 1994, Salvemini performed as MikyMix, appearing at the San Remo festival, the premier Italian pop/schlock musical showcase. By the late 1990s, he transformed himself into a rapper of conscience, appearing at the venerable centro sociale Leoncavallo in early 2004.
He brings a surreal flavor to Italian hip hop. He cites Frank Zappa and Woody Allen as influences. He has been quoted as saying, "Culture is not just what you know, but what you do with what you know" (La cultura non è ciò che sai ma ciò che fai di ciò che sai.).
