BIO

Il Generale aka Stefano Bettini is one of the pioneers of Italian raggamuffin. His 1989 45 rpm "Non e' un miraggio" was the first recording in Italian done in the style of Jamaican toasting.

Il Generale joined forces with Ludus Pinski and guiartist Beppe "Kote" Giacalone, releasing their first album Stupefacente. (Il Generale and Pinski had been part of the legendary punk band I Refuse It!.)

Il Generale is known for his ironic and elaborate lyrics which make wry commentary about his city of Florence in the local language of the street. Il Generale and Giacalone embraced the concept of "edutainment" and released "news items" in raggamuffin on a regular and timely basis. Their songs have attacked Florence officials' project to build a "moving sidewalk" from the central train station to the Duomo, to the intolerance of the city's shopkeepers in their efforts to rid the centro storico of itinerant Senegalese vendors.

In 1993, Il Generale and the Ludus Dub Band recorded their second release Guarda la Luna e non il Dito. The album was controversial because a major record company - RTI - was involved in its production, and in the political atmosphere that existed in Italy of the early 1990s this amounted to "selling out."

Il Generale went on to found the One Drop Band that was a back-up band in for Jamaicans MCs in Italy. He also particpated in Torino Posse's rap "Lega la Lega."
