Phase I — "surreal" backdrop
the art history paradigm offers a few suggestions for backdrop/setting. Dali was one. De Chirico was another. the latter was in keeping with the presepio's italianate theme and its pervasive nostalgia. ah, the mystery and melancholy of a miniature landscape! besides, the arches were easy to draw.
