at the 2008 American Folklore Society conference in Louisville, French anthropologist Valérie Feschet brought me a Ravi "village idiot" santon from the Provence crèche tradition. the character's raised arms is a sign of joy but in the "South Bronx 1975" that gesture suggested another, less happier occasion.
