Tina Modotti (1896-1942)

Tina Modotti

Raised in a socialist household, Tina Modotti emigrated to San Francisco at the age of 17 where she worked as a seamstress. She soon became an actress on the Italian language stage and in Hollywood silent films. She met pioneer photographer Edward Weston in 1921 and after becoming his lover and student, they traveled to Mexico. There, Modotti become part of the artistic and political world of Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Josè Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Modotti's exquisite photography combines the intimate and local with revolutionary politics that helped define the vocabulary of Mexican modernism. There are many books on Modotti
