Vito Marcantonio (1902-1954)
Dubbed the "bread of the poor," Vito Marcantonio served the people of New York's East Harlem as radical Congressman during the 1930s and 1940s. A member of the American Labor Party, Marc fought against racism, anti-Semitism, red-baiting, and unfair labor practices. He championed the independence of Puerto Rico, and as a lawyer defended nationalist leader Pedro Albizu Campos. He also served as legal counsel for scholar and civil rights activist W.E.B. Du Bois and collaborated with Paul Robeson. See Gerald Meyer's Vito Marcantonio: Radical Politician
