Italian American Sites
There are slim pickings for web sites dedicated to Italian Americans. Prepare yourself for animated gifs of billowing Italian & American flags and way too much RED WHITE GREEN.
Here are a few sites I have found useful:
- Maĺa: A Collective of Italian American Women, "a feminist collective dedicated to promoting the creative work of women."
- With works like "La Miseria," performance artist Penny Arcade aka Susana Ventura has explored the dark side of growing up working-class Italian.
- Anthony Parente's about.com page on Italian Americans has some links.
- Virtual Italia is a great all around entry for things Italian, with a local San Francisco focus.
- Italian American Yahoo Club is a place to meet Italian Americans.
- a cool site locating Italian surnames in Italy and USA.
- The American Italian Historical Association is organization of scholars researching Italian American history and culture.
- the Giovanni Agnelli Foundation in Italy sponsors the Italiani nel mondo site with links to the scholarly journal Altreitalie, a form for locating Italian ancestors, and more links.
- the Calandra Italian American Institute of the City University of New York is the only research institute devoted to the study of Italian Americans.
- Montclair State University's Joseph and Elda Coccia Institute in New Jersey is a new academic institution dedicated to Italian and Italian American studies.
- Luigi Bonaffini's Italian Dialect Poetry site is an incredible resource for learning about the other Italian languages.
- The Italian American Studies program at Stony Brook College.
- New York University's Casa Italiana Zerilli-Mariṃ
- USITALIA.info offers there wonderful options:
- America Oggi, the last Italian-language daily in the States;
- OGGI 7, the paper's Sunday supplement; and,
- ViewPoints, the English language discussion of things Italian.
